500 Beers Challenge – Update 1

So before we start with the first update from my 2017 Beer Odyssey, I’ve got an initial admission to make. It pains me to say (that in typical New Year’s resolution fashion) I’ve almost fallen at the first hurdle. When I started out, I was aiming to write a micro review for every one of the beers that I was going to feature. An ambitious and noble venture – I hope you’ll all agree.

Like some sort of medieval monk penning a chronicle – I’ve been diligently plugging away over the last few weeks, summoning up the words to describe the aromas and taste of the brews that had been tantalising my taste buds. But then I got to writing my thoughts for one of the beers at the mid-20s mark. And I realised that this was both tremendously time consuming, and also not doing some beautiful tasting beers the justice.

Sadly, it’s an unfeasible balancing act between taking a lot more than 140 characters to describe the full depth of excellence of the beers I’ve been drinking, and (unless I was actually an 11th century friar who didn’t have the distractions of work and Netflix) not being enough hours in the day to be writing an in-depth review for 500 beers.

So with this in mind, I’ve changed tact and compacted all my beery opinions and stats into a nifty little table. This will feature: the beer, the brewery, the ABV, where I got it from and in what format, the beer style and finally – a quick note on flavours to hopefully inspire people to try the beer for themselves. I’ll also be ensuring to do a lot more posts related to the awesome venues I’m getting these brews from, as well as the breweries and beers that feature in my regularly updated Top 20 lists (and it just so happens that you can find the first version of this right here).

Phew, that feels better. So with that confession over and my beery sins sparged away, here are the first 40 beers that I’ve consumed so far. A pretty good innings and only 460 to go.
